Historically, video game players and enemies have agreed to disagree. We'll kill them and they'll kill us. It's a brutal social contract, but it's worked for the last 30 years. The wallmasters flipped this script on us. Most bad guys are courteous enough to kill us as quickly as possible. Not these giant, zombie phalanges--they shanghaied link back to the dungeon entrance, thus turning our adventure into a boring, repetitive slog and giving us a chance to meditate on all the free time we were spending pretending to be a fey elf dressed in a green camisole and tights.
Even though having a mutant bum rush you with teeth bared is an enormously terrifying experience for any gamer, when you experience an enemy that doesn’t attack you, you really start missing those charging beasts from before. What made metro 2033‘s librarians so frightening was the fact that, if you stared them down, they would opt not to attack – backing away and returning to their territory. However, if you turned your back on them and then turned around, just to make sure they didn’t change their minds, you might notice that they were just a little closer than they were before, their hunched, gorrilla-like forms staring at you from an ever-shrinking distance that only grew smaller each time you turned your back. One might think killing it would remove this tension, but these were extremely tough enemies that could kill you or mortally wound you very quickly. Even if you escaped with your life, having to use the precious few medical supplies patching yourself up would only make things harder down the road.

For a lot of non-gamers, nintendo seems to be a classic video game company with a knack for creating adorable games like mario or kirby, but if you’re a real fan, you know that not every game to come out of nintendo has such a plush look, nor should those appearances deceive you. Even in the most classic of games, there are villains that shouldn’t be taken lightly; honestly, who wouldn’t be spooked by a giant turtle that breathes fire? not to mention that there are plenty of wicked characters that look like they came from unpleasant dreams, like metal face.
Candleman was a 3d puzzle platformer with just about the cutest and most likeable nameless inanimate object in recent video-game history as its protagonist. It was great fun to play, and proved a match made in heaven for youtubers, with its pretty graphics and a difficulty level which was not quite too easy, but not challenging enough to have you rage quitting and smashing your keyboard to pieces.
In what's maybe the only case in human history of the video game being better than the movie, "x-men origins: wolverine" the game is brutal, bloody and so much m-rated fun. The story is kind of nonsensical and convoluted, but it really only exists to throw bad guys at you that you can shred to pieces, and be shredded in return. You take a lot of damage in the game and it shows with bits of flesh being torn away to reveal metal skeleton below. After you kill all the people trying to blow you apart, you can sit there and watch your skin (and clothes) slowly grow back.
